The Senior Nutrition Programs
Congregate & Home Delivered Meals (Meals-on-Wheels)
Adequate nutrition is critical to the health, functioning, and quality of life for our aging seniors. It is essential for healthy aging and the prevention or delay of chronic diseases and disease related disabilities. All senior meals served by amcab meet or exceed one-third of the USDA Recommended Daily Allowances of nutrients needed for older adults. Meals are easily adjusted to the meet the requirements of diabetic diets. Meals may be chopped, ground, or pureed as needed for the senior if a mechanically adjusted diet is required.
amcab administers two types of Senior Nutrition Programs under the Federal Older Americans more commonly referred to as:
Senior Congregate Dining Program
For those seniors who are able to leave their homes by themselves or with the help of a friend.
Do You qualify?
If you are age 60 years or older, or if you are the spouse of a person age 60 years or older, you qualify to attend any of our 15 program sites located throughout Alger and Marquette County (please refer to listing below).
Home Delivered Meals or "Meals on Wheels"
For seniors who are unable to
leave their homes under normal circumstances.
We also provide "Meals While
You Heal" for
seniors who have been recently released from a hospital or nursing home.
In addition to providing healthy, well-balanced, and tasty meals, the meal
deliverers also provide an important service by checking
on the welfare of the homebound seniors when they deliver the meals.
Do I qualify for Home Delivered Meals?
There are specific eligibility requirements for Home Delivered Meals that include:

Home Delivered Meals may begin within a couple of days of contacting amcab.
An in-depth assessment must also be completed by our trained staff in the
participant’s home to verify eligibility. Please call 906-228-6522
or 1-800-562-9762, Ext 304 or Ext 302 to apply or to refer someone. |
What do these programs cost?
Donations are highly encouraged and the suggested per meal donation is $3.00 for both Congregate and Home Delivered Meals. Family members are also encouraged to donate on behalf of their loved ones. No one is ever denied service due to inability to donate. These programs are for seniors and we make every effort to ensure all seniors are served regardless of income. However, since Federal and State funding does not cover the full cost to operate the Senior Meal Programs, they are dependent on the generosity of program participants, their families, and our wonderful volunteers who truly reflect AMCAB’s mission of “helping people and changing lives” by giving the gift of their time.
Gift of Time
The gift of time provided by our many volunteers throughout the Senior Meal Programs is one of our program's strongest assets. A variety of rewarding volunteer opportunities exist within our programs that offer a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community while providing a vital service. For example, a volunteer at a Senior Congregate Dining site may act as a "host" to our seniors greeting participants and ensuring essential paperwork is completed in order for us to comply with our federal funding sources. The “Meals on Wheels” Home Delivered Meal Program offers volunteers the opportunity to bring nutritious meals and a friendly smile to our homebound seniors. Volunteers are also a valued asset in our kitchens that produce thousands of meals every year. Our volunteer team is trained and supported by our Volunteer Coordinator.
If you are interested in giving a gift of your time as a Volunteer, Host, Driver or Kitchen Aide you may contact our office, or you can download the Volunteer Registration form and fax, email or send it to:
